Nutrition on the Net
is a unique database of credible websites that you can visit and use their content knowing they're sensible and written by health professionals. It's a great place to start if you're new to the internet.

It was first published in 1999 as a single page with 25 sites. Now the latest and sixth edition for 2011-12 has 7 pages and over 200 sites - all thoroughly checked. This latest edition also includes new categories for food blogger and nutrition bloggers as well as recipes, healthy cooking and eco-sustainability sites.

Sites are now grouped under 15 categories:

  • Nutrition/Health organisations (Australia)
  • Nutrition/Health organisations (International)
  • Australian government
  • Journals, magazines and enewsletters
  • Body shape/weight issues
  • Alternative health
  • Consumer
  • Links/portals
  • Genetically modified foods
  • Food, environment and sustainability (organic, fairtrade)
  • Food manufacturers, growers and producers
  • Recipe sites

This is the criteria we use to judge the sites we've listed:

  1. There's a distinction between content and advertising.
  2. Site sponsorships are clearly displayed, so it's obvious when the site is recommending its own products.
  3. The owners or sponsors are identified.
  4. The site names its contributors or writers, along with their credentials or affiliated organisation.
  5. You can see the date when the material was created or last updated.
  6. Some references or sources are quoted - or links for more information.
  7. The site is user-friendly with easy navigation, organised content and quick downloading.
