EatKit Archive: TEA, HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

Tea - black, green, white or herbal - is one of life's precious things. It allows you to relax, chillax, refresh and be revived. It encourages a conversation and openness in a way that water, soft drink or coffee never can do. It is a joy to sip and savour. It is one of my favourite moments in life. If you share the same feelings about tea as I do, take a moment to read our thoughts and tea moments from the May EatKit online Twitter chat.

Detox kits - why they don't work

Detox kits - why they don't work

Detox diets and detox 'cleansing' kits are big sellers. They promise lots of things - to purify the body, remove 'wastes' and eliminate 'toxins' (which are never really defined) and rejuvenate the liver. They say they can improve a sluggish digestion, revitalise the skin and boost your energy. Detox has become so accepted in our time-poor, instant world that many people embark on one whenever they've overdone the excesses of life and feel the need to refresh and revitalise. After Christmas is a classic time.

Book review: The Fast Diet

The Fast Diet by Dr Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer

I recently happened to watch dietitian Matt O’Neill comment on the new Fast Diet (aka the 5:2 Diet) on morning TV. It caught my attention not only for Matt’s usual easy-to-grasp explanation but also for the book’s simplicity and lack of a set ‘diet formula’. So when I received a copy in the post, I thought it was time for a review.

Selling carrots like junk food

Selling carrots like junk food

Should everyday vegetables like carrots or broccoli be marketed the same way as fries? Do vegies need to be 'fun' if we want our kids to swallow them? Or should they just eat what they're given? It's a tricky issue for parents and food educators.

Book review: Mindless Eating

"Mindless Eating" is one of the best nutrition books I've read in the last four years. It was a real eye-opener for me - and I suspect for most of us - as it shows why you may not realize how much you're eating, what you're eating - or why you're even eating at all!  It starts out by pointing out that everyone makes over 200 food decisions each day but we have no idea why we're making them nor how we're influenced by the "hidden persuaders" around us!

Understanding chocolate cravings

Understanding chocolate cravings

With so much choice these days and 24-hour food availability, it's worth asking why chocolate is the food craved most often. There are plenty of theories to explain those chocolate cravings but not a lot of solid proof. Here's my shot at an explanation where I aim to show that chocolate is in a "class of its own". Hear me out - I firmly believe no other food comes close to chocolate in terms of its superb flavour, rich concentrated composition, easy overconsumption and sensory chemical make-up.

7 reasons why you MUST eat slowly

7 reasons why you MUST eat slowly

Everything in our lives is fast - fast cars, fast trains, fast lanes, fast money, fast broadband and of course fast food. There's lunch on the run, dinner in under 30 minutes, 2-minute noodles, take-away to grab and run. Life is rushed and stressful. When we finally grab a moment to eat, we bolt it down as quickly as we can. And multi-tasking whilst eating is the norm - we munch a sandwich at our desk, catch up with the news over dinner or read the paper over coffee and a muffin.
