EatKit Archive: TEA, HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

Tea - black, green, white or herbal - is one of life's precious things. It allows you to relax, chillax, refresh and be revived. It encourages a conversation and openness in a way that water, soft drink or coffee never can do. It is a joy to sip and savour. It is one of my favourite moments in life. If you share the same feelings about tea as I do, take a moment to read our thoughts and tea moments from the May EatKit online Twitter chat.

THE QUESTION IN FULL

Q. What's the difference between green tea and black tea? And can I drink green tea at night when I don't want caffeine?

A. Both green and black tea come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis tea bush. Whether these tea leaves end up green or black depends on how they are processed.

Detox kits - why they don't work

Detox diets and detox 'cleansing' kits are big sellers. They promise lots of things - to purify the body, remove 'wastes' and eliminate 'toxins' (which are never really defined) and rejuvenate the liver. They say they can improve a sluggish digestion, revitalise the skin and boost your energy. Detox has become so accepted in our time-poor, instant world that many people embark on one whenever they've overdone the excesses of life and feel the need to refresh and revitalise. After Christmas is a classic time.

A. Energy density means the ratio of kilojoules/calories you get from a given weight or volume of a food. It's really how many kilojoules/calories you can fit into a mouthful!

7 reasons why I love to drink tea

There's nothing as refreshing and relaxing as a cup of tea. It's my favourite hot drink by a long way and one I look forward to every day. I drink almost every type of tea there is. English Breakfast with milk is my favourite but I'm also partial to a delicate Ceylon and most things herbal like lemon and ginger or anything with a little peppermint. The only tea I'm not fond of is Earl Grey.

Don't forget to drink

Water has been dubbed the "forgotten factor" in our diets, but it's the most vital of nutrients. We can survive for days, even weeks, without food, but only four to five days without water. It's needed for so many functions in our body. Read up on why and how much we need.

Soft drink and sugar warning

Trying to eat light and cut back on sugar? Then watch what you drink. Soft drinks, juices, flavoured mineral waters, fruit-based drinks and sports drinks are the major source of sugar, according to CSIRO who analysed the Australian diet for sugar intake. Collectively these drinks supply 30 per cent of the added sugar adults consume but as much as 47 per cent in teenage boys who have a sweet tooth and are the biggest consumers of sugar.

Want to lose weight? Drink water before a meal

Want to lose weight? Drink water before a meal

"Drink lots of water" has always been standard diet advice. I thought the reason was simply kilojoule subtraction - replace soft drink, juice or alcohol with water and you save kilojoules. And it can be a considerable saving. Drink 600ml water in place of a 600ml Coke ‘buddy' (now the most popular single serve size at supermarkets) and you cut back on 1080 kilojoules (258 calories).
